Rev Introduction

Why are pirates brutal and gruesome towards others and crew members? To begin with, pirates are those who commit acts of violence and robbers of the sea. Pirates also went by the name ship attackers. Their ultimate purpose was to steal other ships, take cargo or any other valuable items. Despite how vicious and rough they were, pirates and piracy over the years have been romanticized in many different ways. Now there are different movies and characters out that depict piracy to be viewed in a romantic way, such as Jack Sparrow and all of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. However, those who know the truth about pirates and know their history know that most of the things they did was considered brutal or gruesome acts, especially during the Golden Age of Piracy. They would commit vicious acts towards each other and others. They would carry out various forms of punishment, torture and revenge. They will even plunder other cities and take away all of their valuable Items and cargo. In today’s time when you look at the specifics of some of the actions they committed such as flogging, stealing ships and valuables, or killing others, it can be seen as wild and ruthless. People such as myself hearing this for the first time viewed these pirates as wild, ruthless and lawless individuals. However, there are some sorts of explanations for these types of actions and behaviors. There was something called the code of conduct that these pirates were given because of the kind of people they were. They were already individuals who did not fear anything but torture and punishment. This led to a code of conduct being put in place. If they did not obey, it led to another thing, which was consequences. Therefore, some of these brutal actions and consequences were displayed as a result of breaking the code of conduct. Nevertheless, this behavior grew upon the pirates, which allowed them to carry out torture, punishment and revenge towards crew members and rivals. This became normal. This code of conduct was put in place because of type of people pirates were, however because of some of the things implemented in this code of conduct, pirates commit vicious acts and other forms of punishment.
