Myth of pirates

Violence was a large tactic, not a psychopathic trait for real pirates. While some pirate captains were known for their brutality, the violence was often calculated to instill mortal terror and fear in the sailors, officers, and passengers.

Most people assume that pirates made their victims walk the plank because that is the fate which Captain Hook was planning for the lost boys, but real pirates had no time for such ceremonies. The typical plunder was not cheats full of doubloons and pieces of eight, but of bales of silk and cotton. Some images seem to be fictitious but most com close to reality.

Pirates were not maritime versions of Robin Hood and his Merry men. In the pirates of the Caribbean ships tend to be very large, when in actuality the ships were smaller so they can escape faster. Real world pirate vessels were packed with pirates. The goal was to overwhelm their targets, usually merchant ships with 8-12 sailors and lightly armed to convince them to surrender without a fight.

Pirates were not figures of romance like we depict them as. Fighting was costly and significantly increased risks.
